The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, Peter Obi, recently halted his journey to assist an elderly woman whose goods had fallen while she struggled to board a bus.

He not only helped her but also paid for her damaged wares.

Peter Obi.

This touching moment was captured in a post shared by @TheSerahIbrahim on X (formerly Twitter), where she detailed the incident.

According to her, Obi was en route to the burial ceremony of the late Nollywood icon, Mrs. Nkechi Winifred Nweje, when he spotted the elderly woman across the road trying to lift a heavy bucket while boarding a bus.

In the process, she fell, and her bucket of goods spilled onto the ground.

Moved by the scene, Obi reportedly asked his driver to stop and turn around. Upon reaching the woman, he stepped out of the car to ensure she was not hurt.

Overwhelmed by his presence, the woman smiled and asked for a hug, which Obi gave warmly.

Witnesses at the scene were already helping her salvage the remaining goods.

She explained that she was on her way to the market and that selling the items was her only source of livelihood.

The goods had cost her ₦8,000, and she had hoped to sell them for about ₦10,000, earning a modest ₦2,000 profit.

But with some items damaged, she feared she wouldn’t recover even the initial cost.

Obi then gave her a generous sum to cover the entire cost.

Overjoyed, the woman screamed in gratitude, hugged him, and even attempted to gift him some of her produce in appreciation.

Serah, in her post, used the moment to reflect on the hardship Nigerians face daily, contrasting the struggles of the poor with the lifestyle of the political elite.

She called out the cruelty masked as governance and emphasized the need for compassionate leadership that invests in the people rather than enriching the few.

She ended with a rallying cry: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”

As the post went viral, many Nigerians flooded the comment section to praise Obi’s act of kindness and share their views on the country’s leadership and economic challenges.
